On November 04, 2016 the Vanderburgh County Board of Commissioners proclaimed an “open burning emergency,” which bans all open burning within the county (including any area within four (4) miles of the city limits). The ban remains in effect until rescinded by the board.
During this period, no person shall set, start or allow an open fire within the county unless he or she has in their possession a written permit from the commanding officer of the fire department having primary jurisdiction over the area where the open fire is being conducted. No person shall permit an open fire to burn in any portion of the county during an open fire emergency unless it is attended by an individual eighteen (18) years of age or older in possession of a permit.
