The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) application process for the position of Confinement Officer begins with a pre-qualifying test administered by the Administration Division. To ensure only the most qualified individuals are hired, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office will administer a Corrections Officer Selection Test (COST) produced by a professional testing company.  The test is designed to measure basic skills – reading, problem solving, and report writing – that are important for successful learning and performing the position of corrections officer.

The test will be given every quarter at the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters Training Room. In 2019, the test will be given on March 02, June 08, September 07, and December 07, 2019. To sign up for the test, contact the Executive Secretary at 812-421-6203. Seating is limited to the first 30 applicants that call.

On the day of the test you must provide a valid, government issued identification card (e.g. driver’s license or identification card), a completed application, and a signed Requirements & Disqualifiers form before being allowed to test. These forms can be downloaded from our website. The testing procedure will start promptly at 9 am. If the applicant is late, he or she will not be permitted to test on that date.

Upon successfully passing the test (70% or higher), the applicant will be placed in a pool of eligible candidates to be interviewed by the Sheriff and his Executive Staff. Applicants need only take the written examination once. We will maintain the test scores for five (5) years. Please do not contact us; we will contact you regarding the interviews.  Applicants failing the first test will be required to pay an administrative fee to take a subsequent re-test.

As Confinement Officer vacancies occur, the Sheriff and his Executive Team (the chief deputy and majors) will select a group of candidates for interviews. Upon completion of the interview you may be given a conditional job offer from the Sheriff. Once a conditional job offer has been extended, the background check process begins. The candidate will be required to undergo a drug screen, physical examination, psychological evaluation and a CVSA (Computer Voice Stress Analysis), which is a lie-detector examination. If an applicant is not selected for a job interview, the application will be purged after two (2) years.

Candidates who pass all phases of the conditional job offer will be scheduled for a pre-employment meeting in which you will be informed of a hire date. For more information please contact administration division commander Major Noah Robinson by voice at 421-6222 or by email.
