SUBJECT: Serial Burglars Tricking Residents into Leaving Their Homes
RELEASE NUMBER: 2018-NR-023
CONTACT: Lt. Noah Robinson / Sgt. Kerri Blessinger
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Dave Wedding

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, Warrick County Sheriff’s Office and Evansville Police Department are investigating a series of residential burglaries in which residents were lured away from their home by suspects.

On Thursday, May 03, 2018 at approximately 1:00 PM the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to 4000 block of East Boonville New Harmony Road in reference to a burglary that had just occurred. Deputies spoke to the homeowners, who explained that three hispanic males came to their residence claiming they had damaged their property while running cable behind a fence. The homeowners explained they were persuaded to leave their home to view the alleged damage.

While the homeowners were distracted, one of the suspects went into the home and stole jewelry. The suspects then claimed they could not complete the damage assessment due to needing a tool, at which time they left promising to complete the repair later.

The residents noticed that several doors had been left open in the home, which lead them to discover items were missing. The suspects were described as wearing jeans and t-shirts with no business logos visible. The suspects arrived in a dark colored passenger car.

After concluding the investigation at the scene, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office consulted with the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office and Evansville Police Department. Both agencies were working similar crimes that had occurred within their respective jurisdictions today. In each of the other cases, residents were lured out of their home under false pretenses only to have their home burglarized by an accomplice.

Residents with video doorbells or security cameras are asked to check their footage from today and contact the Sheriff’s Office with any information regarding these suspects or their vehicle.
